Plot Summary:

In 1947, Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), a quiet and intelligent banker, is wrongfully convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. Despite his claims of innocence, he is sentenced to two consecutive life terms at Shawshank State Penitentiary, a harsh and unforgiving prison.

Upon arrival, Andy keeps to himself, drawing the attention of Ellis “Red” Redding (Morgan Freeman), a seasoned inmate known for smuggling contraband into the prison. Red takes Andy under his wing, helping him adjust to the brutal realities of prison life—corrupt guards, violent inmates, and the oppressive warden, Samuel Norton (Bob Gunton), who runs Shawshank with a Bible in one hand and a whip in the other.

Over the years, Andy uses his financial expertise to gain favor with the guards and the warden, managing their illegal money-laundering schemes. Despite his privileged position, he never loses hope of proving his innocence. He secretly chips away at the wall of his cell with a small rock hammer, planning an escape.

Meanwhile, Andy befriends fellow inmates, including Brooks Hatlen (James Whitmore), an elderly librarian who struggles with life outside after being paroled. His tragic fate serves as a grim reminder of how prison can break a man.

When a new inmate, Tommy (Gil Bellows), reveals information that could exonerate Andy, Warden Norton has Tommy killed to keep Andy silent. Realizing he will never get justice, Andy puts his escape plan into motion.

One stormy night, Andy disappears from his cell. The next morning, the guards find only his shoes and a tunnel he dug over 19 years—leading to a sewage pipe and finally to freedom. Before fleeing, Andy exposes the warden’s corruption by sending evidence to the authorities, leading to Norton’s downfall.

Andy escapes to Zihuatanejo, Mexico, a dream he had shared with Red. After Red is finally paroled, he struggles with civilian life but remembers Andy’s words about hope. He violates parole to travel to Mexico, where he reunites with Andy on a sunlit beach—finally free.
